Heat Pump Questions We Get Asked

Yes. Modern heat pumps perform well in cold climates, including Illinois winters. Most systems maintain full heating capacity down to around 5°F. The key is proper sizing for your home and climate, which is why an in-home assessment matters before installation.

A traditional split-system heat pump uses existing ductwork to heat and cool your whole home. A ductless mini-split has no ductwork; it delivers conditioned air directly to one or more zones. Mini-splits work well for additions, older homes without ducts, or spaces that need independent temperature control.

In most cases, yes. A heat pump handles both heating and cooling in one system. Some homeowners pair a heat pump with a gas furnace as a dual-fuel setup, which can make sense in extremely cold climates or for larger homes.
Most heat pumps last 15 to 20 years with regular maintenance. Ductless mini-split systems often last longer. Annual tune-ups help catch small issues before they shorten the system’s life.
Heat pump installation typically ranges from $4,000 to $12,000, depending on system type, home size, and whether ductwork modifications are needed. Mini-splits vary based on the number of zones. We give you a straight number after seeing your space.
Age and repair history are the two biggest factors. If your system is under 10 years old and hasn’t had major repairs, a fix usually makes sense. If it’s older than 15 years, losing efficiency, or in need of a costly repair, replacement is often the better investment. We’ll give you a straight answer either way; we’re not going to push a replacement you don’t need.
Yes. We work on all major brands regardless of who installed them. If your system isn’t working the way it should, give us a call and we’ll figure out what’s going on.
The federal 25C tax credit for air-source heat pumps expired at the end of 2025. Installations in 2026 are not eligible. If you’re interested in geothermal, that credit is still active through 2032. State and utility rebates may also apply, worth checking with your utility company and tax advisor for current options.
